2nd Season Closing /June 19th, 2016

Report by Kate Nelson

The sunny Sunday afternoon session began with the rich and velvety voice of the cello playing Couperin (cellist Lisa Adamson), proceeded into a piano improvisation (Eli Woods) with a poets thoughtful voice (John Pomeroy).

Our esteemed guest performers, Larry Chaplan* (violin) and Alan Brooks* (baritone) then shared their unique and polished voices in a medley of Gershwin tunes. The Sanctuary itself smiled from its salty sea-captains’ rafters. As did we all.

(* Larry Chaplan recently had some of his original compositions heard in the new glamorous HBO tv series "Vinyl" created by Mick Jagger, Martin Scorsese and featuring Mick's son James Jagger.

*Alan Brooks will share his renditions of Gilbert & Sullivan tunes at the Chatham Drama Guild July 1-3 and 8-10)

A rousing piano solo of “Yankee Doodle”, in his first ever public appearance of the 5 years old Song Rauchenbach followed. Then a beautiful Chopin waltz by pianist Carol Davis.

Then a clear, resonant, haunting tone encompasses us as we sit expectantly in our pews. Ah! It’s familiar — it’s Debussy’s ‘Syrinx’ … but whence comes the sound? Flutist Carl Gutowski chose our venue, the Open Mic Classical, to experiment with a way of presenting the archetypal flute solo. He introduced it by saying: "Debussy wrote this not as a performance piece, but as incidental music to play during the interval of a ballet, to be played offstage. So I’d like to play it that way.” The exquisite acoustics of the First Parish, and years of dedication to his instrument, insured that Carl’s experiment would be a success.

Throughout the afternoon Lucy Banner’s humble excellence in accompaniment provided a flawless support to cello, violin and flute alike.

So to all: thanks again / please come again / please spread the word from valley to hilltop so our wonderful cape classical community can continue to evolve and intertwine on our roads less traveled.
